We are finally getting around to making the valance and drapes for our son's room. However, we have sort of hit a roadblock as to what type of drapery header to use for the pinch pleats. We're not going the drapery pleater tape route and will need to use buckram. However, we're not sure what we should be buying.

We have seen a roll of 4" wide drapery header at Joann's that appears to be made of polyester and cellulose or viscose or something like that. I have researched it and I believe it's called "hovotex." They also have traditional buckram on the bolt, but not in a roll.

So our dilemna is, what is the best to use? If we go with the tradtional buckram, we'd have to buy it on the bolt and cut and piece the buckram together to make the header. I'm not sure if this will be wise as we'd like to have a continuous strip of header. However, we're not sure if the other stuff being sold on a roll is okay to use.

Any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If there is a mail order place to buy buckram on the roll, just direct me, unless most of you think the other stuff is okay to use.

Thanks!

Re: Drapery Header - Buckram vs. Hovotex for Pinch Pleats (posted on 8/6/10 3:56 PM ET)
I think the buckram on the bolt is probably for hat making. I googled the hovotex and it's meant to be used for draperies, I say go for it.

Hi,

I use buckram on a roll, that is either 4, 5 or 6" wide, and you can choose wether iron on ( one side only) or sewin. The wider the buckram, the longer the curtains, to keep it all proportional.

I tried to do the cheats way once, tape, and then hated them, just looked at them all the time, they were in my bedroom.

I would strongly recommend a book by Merrick and Day, they are excellent curtain goods suppliers in the UK ( they don,t deliver outside of uk) the book can be bought anywhere, google them, and I have used it all the time with excellent results

I'm not sure what Hovotex is, but if Joann is selling it for draperies, I'm thinking it would be okay. I get my "buckram" from a wholesale place. It's a non-woven because woven is very hard to find these days! The kind I like best boasts about it's easy to stitch qualities, and I find it is true. When I used woven, I'd break my thread often. Try elining.com. I think they sell drapery supplies in addition to lining.

I used the Joann's 4" header material and am pleased with how my pinch pleat drapes turned out. Here's my review:
