seger thread questions (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

OK, I finally started using the "new" serger last night and managed to get the tension right and after adding LOTS of oil. THe previous owner had a new one and let this one sit. My question is this: what colour threads should I buy and do I really need those cones? Can I use large spools of regular thread in the needle and just keep grey and black (or white) in the loopers?
Also, should I have wooly nylon in stock just in case? ANd when should i use it?

Like Miss Frizzle says "Take chances, make mistakes ..." isn't that what fitting is all about? I am happily taking chances and making mistakes as I fit muslin after muslin ...

i have cones of white, black, red, cream, and navy. oh, gray too. otherwise, i use regular sewing machine thread, and sometimes wind a bobbin for the needle thread (the needle uses less than the loopers). the needle thread also shows the least, imo, so i'll sometimes use a color that's fairly close, but not exact. i always match my serger thread to my garment, because otherwise it bugs me, but some people just use whatever.
as far as wooly nylon, that is up to you. i don't like the stuff, i think it's itchy to wear, so i don't use it at all.

I match the left needle if I use 4 thread or right needle for 3 thread as the minimum and this is often standard thread I would also use in my machine. At least makes sure that that matches when I need to use both machines.
In the loopers I tend to use what ever matches closely. I.e navy, grey or black with darker colours, cream or white with lighter colours. On occasion I use all 4 in correct colour when I want the thread to show. But have also mixed and matched several colours in all 4 for an interesting colourful effect on edges and roll hems.
Wooly nylon: Nice effect but to be honest I rarely use it.
My advice play with it and only buy thread on special.

My MIL bought me some spools for Christmas and I now have a medium gray, black, navy blue, white, red and green and a really pale pink (bought for the DD's clothes, I think). I guess all I need now is some cream?

Like Linda, it bugs me when serger thread doesn't match. Since all three of us wear the same colors for the most part it was more economical for me to just invest in the cones. I started with white, black, cream, navy and red and then just bought other colors as I needed them. If I'm sewing with a color I don't plan on using again - which is usually for some oddball project - then I'll just blend the best I can or finish it in some other way. I won't buy four spools or four cones of something for one project.
Woolly Nylon - love it but only use it on my bobbins for twin-needle sewing. I almost never use it in my serger. It tends to run tighter than normal thread and I can't be bothered adjusting tensions for it because I don't think it's worthwhile. I did, however, use it to finish the edges of Christmas stockings about ten years ago and they still look brand new. That was my one and only foray into decorative serging!

I think it's a matter of personal preference. I want my looper threads to match. I really like EZ winder. Bob'N'Serge works well, too.
