My cousin, who is allergic to wool, needs a dressier winter coat. Any suggestions on a fabric to use. Right now all of her coats are sporty styles and nylon fabrics. She really want something that looks dressier and tailored.

You could try acrylic fabrics. For example, this acrylic melton from Fabric.com.

Is she also allergic to other animal fibers like alpaca, or just wool? If alpaca is okay, I'd choose that over a synthetic.

Rochelle Harper, in Sew the New Fleece, her very fine book on working with fleece (the best of them all, in my opinion), shows beautiful examples of coats made with fleece, using patterns like Vogue.

The key is high quality fleece plus the right pattern.
