wash or dry clean? (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 10/20/10 2:48 PM ET
I purchased some fabric from a tag sale. It's a light to medium weight printed cotton woven. There is some metallic gold printed on it. I wasn't planning on washing it because it looks brand new but upon closer inspection I've noticed it smells a little dusty.
Here is my question, would it be OK to wash in a front loading washer on COLD? or should I have it dry cleaned?
I'm not a fan of dry cleaning. Plus, I'm not sure dry cleaning chemicals are the best choice for a printed fabric with metallic ink.
What do you think?

Do you think it would be okay in the dryer with a couple of those dryer balls? That is what I do sometimes I put it on low heat for about 10 minutes with the dryer balls & gets that smell & any dust in there right out. I am not sure with the gold in the fabric if it withstands dryer heat is the only thing. I hope this helps. (I do this same process with our pillows every few months...keeps them fresh & nice).

It's fine to wash home dec fabric before you sew it up. But it will shrink and it will loose the scotchguard finish. Washing will often change the texture of a loosely woven fabic. So as long as you don't care, about the differences washing can make, it's OK to wash.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
