I received my Grammas sm after she passed away, and I need help. There are no books for it, and I have no idea how to thread it. It is an old Universal KBZ model. I have searched all over the "net", and can not find any help. Would love to use it to finish making pillows for Christmas presents using my Grampas ties. Please Help
Thank you
Jackie

Do you have a photo of the machine? I know that I cannot help with just a brand name....perhaps others are more familiar with the universal brand than I am. But if I were to see a photo I might be able to help.

A few clues might help. There are quite a few images on google of vintage universal machines.
Is it straight stitch only? Or zigzag as well.
What type of bobbin arrangement does it have? Where do you put the bobbin in.
Do you know roughly how old it is?
This might narrow the field a bit.

It is a zigzag as well, and the bobbin is under the needle, sideways mounted. I have no idea how old the machine is. I hope the picture helps someone.

Can't tell for sure, but do you have your needle in so you can thread it left to right? That last thread guide should be on the same side as the thread entry.

If you wait for the perfect time to start, you'll never start.

I think the flat side of the needle should face away from the bobbin as you put the bobbin in. So if you looking at the front of the machine the flat side of the needle goes to the right. You then thread the needle left to right.
I would put the thread through that last thread guide (metal hoop by the screw) on the machine above the needle too, then down to the needle and through the thread guide by the needle.

Have a look at this website;
threading diagrams
You might need to browse through a bit until you find a machine that looks similar to yours.
I used to have a Japanese made class 15 Crown Point machine that was similar to yours. It sewed really well and was a strong powerful machine.

what about this one;
White machine
It looks a bit similar.
I was just wondering about the placement of your thread after it has gone round the tension discs should it be under that metal finger first then through the spring?
Any thoughts anyone.?
