so with my new job, I have to go back dressing like a real person for work...
I had purchased a bunch of those home dry cleaning kits & they work well enough in between dry cleaning but I am looking to get even more frugal with it...also, they arent so great if there is a scent and/or stain involved
I have 2 or 3 pair of RTW pants ( lined) made of wool... Im wondering should/could I wash them by hand in Woolite, hang to dry and then use my clothes steamer to press.
thoughts??

I'm not afraid to wash wool, however, if it is RTW, you don't know how the fabric was handled prior to construction. Even if and that is a big if, the fabric was pre-treated for shrinking, some of the interfacings and linings etc, may not be washable or pre-treated.
If I make a garment out of wool and know how I handled it, I wouldn't hesitate to wash a wool pair of pants, providing that everything has been pre-treated. In your case, I don't think I would try it. You might get away with it and you might not. A roll of the dice.

I agree with Sewbehind. Wash them only if you are prepared to replace them if you have to.

I have a pair of wool pants that I can wash, but the fabric was prewashed by me. First I take a square and toss it into the washer and dryer. If it survives, then the whole piece will go in.

You are washing them by hand, which means they aren't getting the agitation of a washing machine, which can result in felting. Many, many times I've washed things by hand (and even tossed them in the washer, on gentle cycle) and the results have been fine.
This includes silk and several types of wool.
You say your pants are lined. Chances are, they are acetate lined, because acetate is cheap lining. And acetate can be handwashed, as long as you use cold water and hang dry. I wouldn't use your clothes steamer, but instead invest in some pants stretchers. Picture here They are excellent! You don't have to press them and they coolest thing is they dry your pants very quickly. I have two sets of these; for my jeans and my other pants.

well I risked it on 2 pair... One pair looks OK.. the other, the 100% wool clearly shrunk.. the lining ( listed as polyester) is clearly hanging longer than the pant leg despite it being sewn in at the waistband...

I'm having flashbacks to my childhood. I had no idea pants stretchers were still available!

I didn't either. One of my aunts used them all the time. She had five sons and used them on all their jeans. She must have had tons of them.

Pants stretchers reminds me of my father's Naval uniforms. When they got washed and the stretchers put into 6 pairs of size 48 waist pants and then hang them on the line.... it was quite a sight. I used to laugh until he decided I was old enough to learn to iron them afterwards.
There was still a lot of ironing involved.
Perhaps the hem can be let down on the wool pants that shrank?

Pants stretchers are the best. Why did they go out of fashion? Now I want to buy some.
