Help, my brain is in knots! I am trying to copy a pair of simple RTW lined bikini bottoms. There are just two pieces, a front and back and the same for lining. On the RTW pair I can see that all the seams have been machined except for part of the crotch seam where I am guessing it was turned right side out. I simply cannot figure out what order to sew these together so I can do the same thing. I am thinking it must be similar to a lined shift dress where you leave the side seams open and turn through the shoulders - does anyone have any experience of this and can help me before I go crazy! Thank you!

I imagine sewing crotch self and lining together with the front & back bodices(self and lining) attached to the crotch as well (clearify -pair the self and lining bodice's front, sew (sandwich ) this pair to self and lining crotch, the seam is hiding in between crotch's self and lining. Do the same to the bodice's back pieces.)

Sew side seams self -left and right, lining -left and right. The seam allowances of both self and linging are facing each other. Just lke when you do the lined jacket.

Sew leg's hem with elastic self and lining together, then do the same to waistband.

Sorry if it doesn't make sense.

I have to puzzle this out every single time I do panties or a bikini bottom. Do you have a pattern for any of those you can use as to consult the directions? If not, do as Jaeng says (assuming the crotch is a separate piece from the front and back):

Sandwich crotch and crotch lining with front piece, right side of crotch to right side of front, right side of crotch lining to wrong side of front. Stitch.

Now, pin the back to the crotch, right sides together. The crotch lining is still hanging free of the back.

Burrito roll the front (as for a shirt yoke, see KBenco's blog and this PR tip), wrap the crotch lining over to the back, and pin the crotch lining to the back/crotch seam you've already pinned. Stitch.

If I am recalling how this works correctly (please check while pinned, before stitching! It may be the back that needs to be burrito rolled), you can now pull the burrito-rolled front right-side-out and you will have a fully enclosed crotch seam. Then finish the legs and waist with elastic.

As I said, I have to figure this out every &!^% time, so don't sew anything until you've checked with pins to make sure it works!

The absolute easiest and my preferred way, because it doesn't create a bulky crotch seam, is to sew the back to the front (crotch & sides), do the same with the lining. Now place the lining inside your bathers, baste in place along all openings, then attach the elastic.

This is not how RTW does it but I prefer it. The RTW way creates a bulky crotch seam. If you really want to do it the RTW way though, here goes.

Take the front main piece, put the lining on top, wrong sides together. Treat this as one piece.

Now you are going to pin all the layers together, like a sandwich, along the back crotch seam.

Put the main back piece on your table, right side up. Put the front on top, right side down. Finally put the back lining on top, right side down. Sew the crotch seam. Once you separate all the pieces you should see that the crotch seam is now fully enclosed inside the lining.

Sew the lining together at the sides. Do the same for the main pieces. Baste the lining inside along the waist edge and legs and attach your elastic.

I hope this makes sense.

Thank you all, I will pluck up courage to take the computer into my sewing room and have another go following your advice, I really have problems visualising how it works but I have faith! The only patterns I have are Burda magazine ones and I figured they would not help much! Thanks again, if I get stuck again I will be back!

My plan- and I may completely off on this- is to sew the outside layer and the liner both separately, sew them together at the top seams, turn it right side out, then fold the outer fabric and elastic around the leg openings, encasing the lining. I am using clear elastic to keep things from being too bulky.
