I did a search on the boards for how to sew in labels and I only found a few topics. I'm not sure either of those have the answer I'm looking for, and they're read-only, so I'm posting a new topic. I'm thinking of buying these labels, but before I do, I wonder how to put them in. It looks like they have to be sewn on at least 2 sides. When sewing them into the back of a t-shirt, wouldn't the stitching show on the back of the shirt?? I know for something with facings, I should sew them onto the facing, but what about a basic t-shirt that doesn't have a facing? How do you do them?? Also, if it's the type of label I'm thinking, it would be tooooo scratchy to just sew the top edge into the top seam. Any suggestions??
TIA,
Jessica

Jessica, you do have to sew those in on two sides. If you are putting them on a t-shirt, the stitching will show on the outside. You could also consider sewing them into a side seam, or on the outside of the garment at the front left hem - I have seen a number of designer labels sewn on clothes that way. It makes the label a design feature.

Sometimes I fold mine in half and just catch the ends in a seam. Usually only with work stuff though. For my own garments I don't bother with labels unless I'm making a jacket.

Ann, if I sew them into the side seam, how exactly do I do that? Just sew one long side?
Gigi, I will probably skip labelling most of my clothes, but with t-shirts, it's difficult to tell at first glance which is the front or back. And with my kids' clothes, they often put their clothes on backwards when they dress themselves. Hopefully tags will help, but it's certainly not a guarantee! :-)

I put labels in all my clothes; I think it looks better. For tops without a facing, I use matching thread in a moderately small, tight zig-zag and sew through the side ends and the fabric about 1" below the collar. It really is not that noticeable.

sorry to post 2 in a row, i didnt realize that she is advertised at the top area of the site.. www.clothinglabels4u.com....lisa..shes great, and if you go to products i believe, you can see different labels people had her make, along with mine!!

Cathy, if it's not too noticeable, I think I'll just go ahead and do that. I hadn't thought to use a decorative or zigzag stitch. That would look nicer than just a straight stitch.
VK, I saw your labels on Lisa's site. I considered her for awhile, but I don't need 1000 labels. I wouldn't be able to use them in a lifetime! Yours are really cute though. LOVE the kitty!!

If you just want something so it's easier to tell the front from the back, I have been known to just put a folded tab of ribbon into the back of pants/shorts, t-shirts, etc. for my kids. I picked a flower print one for my dd and a dog print for my ds. This tab at least increases the odds of clothing being put on correctly.

I've actually done that with a rectangle of fleece because it doesn't ravel, and it's soft. I want a combination of a "professional" looking label, saying who made it (ME!) and a way for the kids to know front from back.
