I'm working on my first quilt of major proportions, a log cabin for a queen size bed. In trying to decide what layout I wanted, I was getting somewhat confused. You lay one out, then move onto the next, but forget what the last one looked like.

I grabbed the digital camera, had dd help with a few different layouts I was considering and was able to take a few pics then compare on the computer. Yeah! I was glad. The layout I thought I would like ended up not being the one that won, so to speak.

one of the best things about quilting to me is the suprise of it sometimes. I seem to fall in and out of love with a project depending on what stage i'm at.

I've lost count of how many times I lost track of the layout - digital camera is def a good idea

That is a fantastic idea. It'd also be great for remembering which blocks go next to which while you are sewing... my bed is my "layout table" so I can't just leave the pieces there until I'm done. I have to lay them out, decide, them pick them all up and somehow remember what goes to what. I usually chart it on graph paper, but a picture would be so much easier. Thanks for the great tip!

I do something entirely different. I don't want to have to look at a picture while I'm zipping through sewing blocks, and I like to zip through them--believe me! Click here I find with this method, I can stack my blocks in any order, stitch the groups together and when it comes time to stitch more, I'll know what the layout is simply by the attached sticky notes. They're easier to store this way, too, so that if I should go away from it for a while, I can pull out the stack, and sew where I left off.
