Ironic, but that's the gist of this article from a Fashion Week series on behind-the-scene jobs in the Wall Street Journal. You can also read about model dressers, producers, security staff, and makeup artists.

Wow that really is quite a story. I'm glad he found a place to relocate though.

Good ole WSJ just could not resist a little dig at organized labor could they? I don't want to roll the clock back a hundred+ years but they seem to want to.
Anyway, interesting, either someone else will come along to replace him who is willing to work for less, the machines will just have to be sent out further for repair or the rest of the jobs will move overseas...it's a global economy after all. Maybe I can sell refurbished machines in NY.

WSJ didn't make a dig at organized labor, that comment came from the repairman. He was partly right, but the unions, particularly in this area, were necessary to effect safe labor conditions. When the power of organized labor goes too far then it's to the detriment of all.... particularly in conjunction with the availability of low cost labor and high demand for a lot of stuff cheap.
And he didn't lose out because he wasn't willing to work for less, the industry shrank so he had less business and his landlord wanted to double (or nearly so) his rent - his ROI on a repair plummeted.
Anyway, for that oft asked question "where can I find a good osmg?!" - here's one!

WSJ did do the dig, they didn't have to mention that but they did, I was a journalism major once, trust me WSJ had lots of other quotes they could have used, they edited it, they are a conservative paper so that is what they do that's how journalism works and that's their right I was just pointing out they were up to there same old stuff. If you or anyone agree with them and not me that's great but it is what a conservative paper does, I can promise you a liberal paper would have made the article read quite differently.
And I didn't say he wasn't willing to work for less, I just implied that when he quits there might be someone willing to work for even less...that is NOT a good thing.

That's how the free market works.
