Is RTW and pattern sizing equivalant? (Moderated by EleanorSews)

I am making a dress for the niece of a friend. Since this is going to be a surprise for her birthday I can't get her exact measurements but she wears a 4/5 in store bought childrens clothing. Are pattern sized and RTW sizes the same for kids clothes? If they're not the same, approximately how many sizes should I go up or down? Also, the dress that I am making her is not very fitted, but it has no zipper so it has to be able to be pulled on and off over her head. Thanks!

Not necessarily. I find the "Big 4" to be the most grossly off in terms of sizing...usually on the side of h-u-g-e. If you are sewing Burda, KwikSew, Jalie, or Ottobre, you can expect sizing to be more accurate. What I would do is snoop shop w/ a tape measure. Find a RTW dress in her size that is similar to what you are making and take some measurements, then compare to your pattern. Also, make sure you read the reviews here for your dress. Hopefully the reviewers have included info on sizing accuracy. Sorry I can't be more definitive, but the US kids' patterns are SO unpredictable. They really don't do us any favors.
The only upside is that if the garment is too big, she will always grow into it. Eventually. (lol)
