Heyo
Idiot question of the week... On a whim I picked up a pin type skirt marker at an estate sale for a buck. Looked in great shape, plus I have plans to do a dress and a couple of flowy type skirts, so what the hey.
Thing is, I've never used one of these so..is it for making the actual hem line guide or are you supposed to be able to turn the hem at the same time?
Anyone know? This marker only has a a place for the pin to go thru..no other markings.
Thx
Shelley

The ones I've seen are for marking the fold line.

I think you can use it either way. My Mum always used it to pin up the hem, but I've seen them used to just mark the hem line as well.

The advantage of using it to pin up the hem is that you can see straight away if it is going crooked. I have many memories of Mum getting annoyed with me because I wriggled or didn't stand straight, and the hem was going crooked as she pinned.

As a woman who started sewing when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I'm all too familiar with this type of skirt hem marker. You put the pins in at the hemline, single thickness. Then when you go to press the hem up, you remove the pins, using them as a marker where to fold and press, and place them in the hem allowance.

I just got one of these as well, at a thrift store, so glad to see some directions about how to use it.

Does anyone have a link/picture to this device? I'm not familiar with it (I don't think) and am having trouble visualizing it!

Thanks!!

Ah thanks guys.. I couldn't see how it'd do a turned hem, but wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything.
I figure it might be a nice gadget to try on the next skirt to mark the hem fold line. My other half is more willing to endure my request for help if there's a gadget involved too. ; )
My pin marker is a shorty like this one:
