I going to Houston next month for three days on business and would like to visit some neat fabric stores. I am looking for fabrics to sew clothes with. I'm game for anything. I like exotic and unique. All we have here is a Hancock's and Walmart (usually not exotic and unique). Thanks for any help!

I'm told that High Fashion Fabrics is the place to go. I've only been to Universal Fabrics in Rice Village, which had nice fabrics - weighted somewhat towards dressy fabrics - but rather expensive. Fun though

ETA: Just reread your post and Universal certainly had "exotic and unique" :D

High Fashion Fabrics downtown is your best bet - they have it all! There are several reviews for them here on PR

We have several depending on what you are looking for. The one that gets the most of my money is High's (picked up a piece of Cavalli silk charmeuse just last week). It is also very spacious and well laid out. Don't forget that there is the interior store right across the street, they do have some fabrics that could be used for either.
What kind of garment fabrics are you looking for?
Universal in Rice Village (southwest of DT) does have quite unique fabrics, but you have to dig for bargains. They are a tight little store that I will admit is getting quite cramped. But, they do have a very wide variety and some real gems if you get to spend some time really going through the store.

Thanks for the recommendations. I guess "exotic" for me would be nice knits, silks, and bottom weight material. There are mainly quilting cottons, bridal stuff, and whatever Hancock's thinks is in season here. It would be nice to actually look and touch the material before I bought it. I have had some luck online, but also some disasters. If I'm going to shell out big bucks, I'd like to see and hold the material.

But I do like bargains too, and I'm not afraid to dig. Houston is about 6 to 8 hours away, so I want to take advantage of this trip.

Here's a thread from when I asked about Houston Fabric stores last fall: Houston fabric store thread. I don't know if anything has changed. I hope you have a great trip and find what you are looking for!
