What should I do? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 6/7/11 2:04 PM ET
My main reason to go is the McQueen exhibit, are there any other exhibits going on now that are worth the trek?
I also have Mood, Parons, and Steinlauf & Stoller.
I also need to have lunch so any places you love, (I eat everything).
Thank you!!

If you are already at the Met for the McQueen exhibit, I'd recommend just visiting some of their other exhibits and/or permanent collections. I don't know if you've been there before, but it doesn't matter really... I've been there so many times (including at least once a year growing up for school field trips) and I still enjoy it every time. Between the Met and the fabric shopping, I doubt you'll have time to go anywhere else! As for lunch... are you planning to eat closer to the museum or closer to the garment district? Do you want something cheap and fast or maybe a little nicer? Are you willing to go out of the way a bit or do you want something that keeps you pretty close to your destinations?

I used to live in NY/NJ but one of the last times I was there so much had changed it was mind boggling.
I'm open in terms of lunch, I think I'd be looking for something that I can sit for a bit, it's going to be a long day, and lunch is going to be me regrouping as well as resting.
I'm a little worried about the wait to get into the exhibit, I'm on their mailing list and they said they would be opening this past Monday to accomodate the crowds $50 a ticket to get in to see it on that day.

i would also visit the excellent and elegant consignent shops near the Met, Encore, Bis, Michaels and La Boutique Resale. because they are resale stores you can get up close and personal to the clothes which are from tippty top desigers.
For food in new york you can do antyhing from the super fanciest to street food and all will be good. I would avloid like the plague any restaurat that you have seen a branch of in your local mall. it's industrial food not worth spending money on.
for a super cheap lunch look for 2 bros pizza. it's a dollar a slice. My kids love it because it's fresh but it's not going to be the best pizza in new york, but it may well be far better than the best pizza in your home town. My husband insists that the worst Ny pizza is better than the best pizza in most place.
There are far too many restaurants that are expensive but not all that special food wise. I recently had a mind blowing meal at 11 madison park, but that was an amazing way to spend an afternoon..not a quick lunch.
i would go for funky ethnic. on 34th street between 7th and 8th there is a chinese bakery that alos has a hot buffet. it's really , really inexpensive.the buffet food is fine but not amazing..the bakery 's chinese buns are fabulous , weird and dirt cheap. several of the selections cost less than $1.
i would also see what exhibits are showing at FIT. i haven't seen one bad exhibit there yet..and it's free.

If I'm in NY and eating at a chain you have permission to shoot me.
There used to be a place on Broadway in the 30's that I would buy a breakfast bread and coffee, it was like a skinny bagel, completely covered in sesame seeds, slightly sweet, about 8" around, and it was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy and they were no longer there the last time I went. whaaaaa
FIT is my alma mater, so I'll be hitting the museum if it's open and the bookstore.
I will be needing 3 meals, I arrive at 8am and leave the city at 7pm.

Remember Templeton the rat in Charlotte's Web when he went to the carnival and ate until he was sick? That's me every time I go to NYC.

it's just that the chains are next door or around th corner from something local and good.
My favorite place to eat in the garment district is pick a pita on 8th avenue near 40th street. it's sells heavenly schwarma ad felafel. it's kosher..and so delicious that most of the patons are folks who aren't there because it's kosher. on tuesday's and thursdays they seel lamb schwarma. It'a a hefty meal in a pita. You won't be hungry for a long time after.
Those sesame rings are sometimes around.. i think of them as being very middle eastern.
the halal food trucks always smell delicious..haven't partaken though...wish they were kosher.
40th street is now cheek by jowl with delis...now that the Times building is across the street. closer to penn starion there is a mac and cheese restaurant...unfortunately their basic mac and cheese isn't very good..about the quality of a generic store brand ( I know it seems so tempting...but just keep walking) they have inmpresasive mix ins tho.
Right near the public library , going east there are several tiny korean cafeterias that are inexpensive and good.

I just received the Threads email, and the current exhibit at FIT is "Sporting Life", I might have to miss that one. If I had more time I would go.
Felafels... I think you might have something there.
I've never heard of mac and cheese (I'm assuming this is a chain?). I cook at home, all of my meals, so I don't like things that are too processed. The last time I was in NY I stayed near Balthazars and picked up dinner in their takeout next door. Their soups and breads were very good but I will totally do other cuisines.
Bird - I thought all the walking cancels out all of the eating lol.
I will have to look for a bakery later for the day for a cupcake :)
or a brownie, or a little chocolate.

Thanks Nikki, I'll have to keep that on the list. You must have posted when I did, I didn't see it until now.
