What will be next? FLOODS (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 6/8/11 3:48 PM ET
So, since winter and the amount of snow and ice we received, then the cold Spring mixed with all the hail and tornadoes, now the Cicada's are everywhere - making me deaf in the garden, getting caught in my hair (almost having a heart attack btw), then lets not forget the earthquake the other day and now the floods are coming.
And now wondering how in the heck I'm going to get into my car to drive home from work today with all the Cicadas flying around my car. There is NO way I could drive with one in my car.
How is everyone surviving?

Haven't seen cicadas in many years, since I lived in New Mexico. I remember how startling they are!

Sorry about the cicadas. In Ohio they came out every decade or so & didn't bother anything except their noise.
The smoke here is unbelievable. 10 days ago my husband flew over that fire & it was staggering from the sky. But it's much bigger now, a monster.
I'm tired of the drought, fires, dust, tornados, floods, weird wind shears & loss of life. Rough year.

I guess that's what inspired this ice cream.

I remember a lot of them emerging in 1970. I thought they were cool! So alien-looking.
OK, it was sort of annoying when they tried to crawl up the inside of my bell-bottom jeans...
I'm outta here. I think it's hailing outside or something.

We used to play with them when we were kids. It has been a rough year. Smoke from the ARizona fires all the way to Iowa. The Western Kansas newspaper said that you could smell it and see the smoke all the way out there. Floods all up and down the Mississipi and Missouri Rivers. Ick.

Boy that's hilarious! Thanks for posting.
Did you see the movie Hidalgo? The daughter of the sheik was trying to explain not to fear the locust, that it was a gift from God.
Then they got stranded & a cloud of locusts appeared... which they had to eat as they were starving.
In the Hidalgo DVD, they have these scenes about how they made the movie. And they discovered this bakery in Italy that made locust cookies! They looked exactly like the real thing so that's what they used in the movie. When the star is eating one, he's actually eating a cookie.
All the windows are closed up tight but it still smells like a house real close is burning. Hard to sleep.

Oh, so that's what that racket is? we have noticed a different sound this year than the last two summers and were wondering what was up.
We haven't seen swarms of them yet, but we are rural so I'm sure it won't be long. Have seen some huge bugs flying around, maybe those are the cicadas? I don't know. I don't leave the house anymore except to take the kids to their lessons and to go grocery shopping. It is too icky outside.

And when driving, they hit your windshield and it sounds like popcorn popping. Yuck.
Yes, and I do believe that John the Baptist ate them with honey or that's what I read. If I was starving, yes, I would probably eat them. Supposedly in the Bible there are bugs you are forbidden to eat...it has to do with the location of the wings or the legs...I forget. Obviously, Cicadas are approved. It doesn't sound a bit appetizing to me.

Our cicadas are finally starting to wind down. My twenty-something year old niece says if you rip the legs off a cicada, their heads pop off. Grossss!
