besides a good ironing board and a good iron (hmmm, ideas?), what kind of ironing accessories are useful or bare necessity for sewing?

I find a pressing ham is essential for certain rounded contours (sleeve heads, darts), a point presser/clapper necessary for almost all collars (cheaper to buy on ebay!), a seam roll for pressing loooong seams like pants legs or any place you don't want the pressed seam allowance to show through. And a pants seam pressing board lets you iron each side of your nice trouser legs without messing up the under-surface.

Totally agree with Elona - those would be the basics that I feel I need.

An Ezy-Hem is a good thing to have, too.

This is what the EZ-Hem looks like, and it's a simpler way of putting up hems of various lengths. It just makes it easier to get the same size hem all the way around. I like it especially for dresses and skirts, because they have a huge hem to go around!

ETA: Here's a sewing gauge which is a bit cheaper and will do the same thing for you, but the EZ-Hem is easier on curved hems (I mean, in my opinion ~ some might find it otherwise). This sewing gauge is handy for marking buttonhole spacing.
