I have been working up this dress (view A) for a little while now for dd's birthday. There was a small, but still irritating, error earlier on. I needed to cut 4 of the skirt back pieces because of the dress having an over and under skirt. The pattern's cutting line was marked "cut here for view A" and so I did. Looking at the picture, I should have known to cut the overskirt longer, but the pattern should still have been marked "cut here for contrast A, view A".
So anyway... this pattern has sweet little puffed sleeves that are attached differently than I have seen before. I carefully read, then followed the directions. No dice. The shoulder elastic was going to emerge angled out of the armscye seam, rather than perpendicular to the bodice as it should. I spent literally hours studying the pattern, illustrations and my work and cannot see any possible way that the given directions could produce the correct result. I emailed McCalls to plead for help and am awaiting a reply. I ended up ripping some stitching out and putting it in with a lot of handwork.
Very long story to ask the simple question: has anyone else found a big error like this? I tried a lot of ways to test their method and it just wasn't happening.

GAH! Oh my goodness! Do I have to have a big typo in every single post title I write?

Over the years, I have occasionally found significant errors in patterns. It doesn't happen too often, but when it does--and you have checked several times to make sure it's probably not your mistake--it's always worthwhile to contact the parent company to complain or ask for a refund. Usually you will get one, or a promise of a freebie revised pattern. Once, just once, I even got a partial refund for my ruined silk fabric from Vogue!

Thank you, Elona. At least I know it has happened. I'm hoping to hear from McCall today.

FWIW, I once bought a Simplicity pattern, paid full price for it because I needed it right way, $12.00, and found that a piece was printed entirely backwards, and then wasn't recognized in the directions. I had to go back and buy another.

I don't understand how the sleeves would be attached differently. It could be because they are resting on that narrow piece of fabric at the top of the armscye, but that's a guess. I'm curious to see what the directions say how to attach the sleeves.

I don't think I can explain it in a way that makes sense but I'll give it a try. One of the first steps is to baste the little sleeve to the bodice below the armscye notches. Then, the lining is sewed and understitched to the bodice, all the way to the raw edges and is basted below the armscye notches. The lining is turned in and the shoulder elastic inserted in the sleeve. Then, the lining is opened out again, the sleeve sandwiched between bodice and lining, and stitched above the notches. Sew full seam. At this point, I should be able to flip the lining back in and have the sleeve finished. How can the shoulder elastic be emerging from the bodice when I closed the bodice and lining earlier? It comes out twisted and angling up and out.
I'm sure that doesn't make any sense, but there it is. ;)
