Hi

I'm venturing into the world of skirts and found this Burda easy magazine pattern - linedrawing

Picture - doesn't really show - the model is sitting

I would love to make it in a flowing stretch fabric and was wondering if I can do that or would it be too heavy? The patterns calls for crepe georgette...

Also - if I make it in the stretch, I could omit the zipper? How would you add elastic casing to the pattern?

TIA
Maria

Maria, do you have a specific knit in mind? I would start by measuring out the waist circumference, fold/pin/baste a tube of the fabric to that width and see if you can pull it over your hips - if you can, you shouldn't need a zipper. That's my unscientific method of deciding if I need a zipper or not.

In general, when using woven patterns with knits, you may want to go down a size. In this case you could easily take out width in the gore seams if you need it, so you could start in your size and start by pin-fitting.

Tak Åsa - that's a good idea!

How would you add elastic (to keep the skirt up) or isn't that necessary?

In reply to MariaDenmark
Here's a good tip by Deepika for an elastic casing: Bulk-free elastic waistband, and here's another tip by Jennie Pakula: Elastic waist for lightweight skirt. This is the one I would choose, if the skirt is lightweight enough.

With a thin elastic you only need to add a little length, or even no length at all, to the waist.

Maria, I agree with Åsa. I've used a few burda patterns for wovens in knit fabrics. What I would do is sew the front seams and baste the side seam (one side only) and then pull it over the hips. In most cases it should work and you dont need a zipper. Then you can simply put elastic on top or bind the edge like I did in this review.
