Tonight I tried the rolled hem setting on my new 1034D (I know there's a thread on 1034D rolled hems, but this question is even more basic than that! ), and while I'm sure there are still some tension and length issues to sort out, my biggest hurdle is that I'm not sure what the finished stitch should look like! Does it really roll the edge of the fabric around, like a hand-rolled hem? Or is it just a very tight edge-wrapping of the serger stitch? Or...? ('Cause I can do the second option, but I'm not sure that's right.) A Google image search didn't help tremendously, either. I have a RTW knit top with rolled hems at the hem/sleeves/ruffles--and on that fabric it's extremely narrow and does feel almost like a tiny cord all around the edges. Is that what I'm aiming for? That's not what I'm getting. (I was just testing it out on some quilting cotton, nothing fancy.)

Thanks!!

Serger rolled hems are NOT tubes, rolled hems made by hem with with a sewing machine rolled hem foot. They are more like a stitched cording. The lower looper is tight, so the stitch is not balanced, and the tightness "rolls" (pulls) on the fabric edge and upper looper thread, resulting in a cord-like feeling.

I can't produce identical rolled hems all the time. Fabric (thickness, stretchiness), thread, and more result in slightly different rolled hems with my Viking Huskylock.

HTH. It sounds as though you're on the right path.

ETA: Here's a YouTube video showing the rolled hem on the Brother 1034D serger. (The title says 1034D; the text says 929--close enough?)
