shorten above or below line? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)
Re: Question about Loes Hinse Gore Skirt (posted on 7/30/11 8:19 PM ET)
I'm looking at the pattern for Loes Hinse's Gore Skirt, View B - it has 6 identical gores, no godets.
The pattern is clearly WAY too long - it literally goes from my ankle to my boobs! There is only 1 lengthen/shorten line, and I'm unsure if I'm supposed to remove length above, below, or centered on this line. I need to take out about 6".
There is no hip mark on the pattern, but if I hold it so that the lengthen/shorten line is at my hip, most of the extra length is above it. If I hold the pattern so that the top is 1" (for elastic) above my waist, the lengthen/shorten line is about midway between my hip and knee.
I know many of you have made this skirt and shortened it, where did you take out the length?

I made this skirt and shortened it, probably 3 inches. I always look for a straight spot on the pattern before the flare and below the hip line. That's usually mid to lower thigh. Just fold out what you need and true up the edges. The most important thing is to make the adjustment so it doesn't impact the design or fit.
Since you need so much shortened, doing it in 2 places is OK.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
