Can I swap out a power knit for tubular knit? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I am working on a professional maternity wardrobe for myself now that I am well into my first trimester - exciting! The patterns I am using, from the Burda mag 08-2006 issue, call for tubular knit as the waistband. I'm wondering if I can subsitute a power knit or other kind of knit with good recovery in its place. And, if I can, how would I do so? Any tips are appreciated!

I think that the call for a tubular knit is just so that there isn't a seam. I don't see any reason why you couldn't substitute any other knit that has the same amount of stretch. Having never seen the pattern, though, this is just theory.
I'd lengthen the pattern piece for seam allowances and then just stitch together. Instant tube!
I'd zigzag and then press the seams open rather than serging, though. That way there would be less bulk at the seam.

I probably have too many sewing machines, but how am I supposed to resist when they're either free by the side of the road or people give them to me?

A tubular knit is ribbing in the US. Ribbing can be hard to find, but the cotton rib knits at Joanns with a bit of lycra make a great substitute. Another knit with good recovery will work, but it needs to have a large amount of stretch, because ribbing has at least 50% stretch, usually more.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
