I am starting to dabble in applique and wanted to know where to find the best deals on interfacing. I see people using Pellon Wonder Under for their projects, I'm seeing this stuff run slightly less than $3/yd. Any other tips or brands of interfacing I should consider? Any fave online sources?

I buy it on sale at Joann's in large amounts. The last time was a 50% off sale. And, you can always use their famous 50% off coupon with one cut item being eligible. Besides the savings on price per yard, there is less waste in buying longer lengths. Less waste of time and gas too since I don't have to run to the store all the time for staple items like interfacing.

Unrelated, but maybe helpful. I've starting recording the Fons & Porter sewing show on the BYU channel. A tip was submitted regarding applique patterns. Draw out your pattern. Make a sandwich of paper or interfacing about 10 pieces thick. With a needle only, no thread (probably a thick needle, don't think they said), stitch your pattern drawing. When you are finished the needle holes that sewed through all the fabric layers (remember, no thread) will outline your cutting line. The tip was also good for preparing pieces for paper piecing as the paper will tear away easier once it has been perforated with the needle.

Best wish with your new interest.

There might be some confusion about terminology? Pellon is not interfacing - it's a fusible web. Some people use interfacing to the back of the appliquéd item to prevent 'strikethrough' (seeing the color or print of the background fabric) but it will not help fuse the appliqué to the background.
A separate fusible product like steam-a-seam, heat'n'bond or wonder under would be used in that case, to affix it to the fabric.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the tips and clearing up about terminology. I used Wonder Under for costume repair work before so I think I will stick with that stuff. I am looking forward to making cute appliques to add to my future quilts. Much thanks again.

I am currently working in a fusible applique project and discovered a easy method for removing the paper backing of Wonderunder once the applique shape is cut... use a straight pin to score the paper in the middle of the applique piece, then peel the paper away starting in the center working out to the edge. this will prevent fraying and make a nice clean sharp edge.

Thanks, Doris, helps me too.

For anyone that uses Stitch Witchery for this type of application, I've always bought that by the yard at Joann's Fabrics also. It has been in the interfacing section and I have bought it at the interfacing sale prices.

I order through these folk... they have decent prices. The closest Joann's is an hour away.
