How to Burn Test Fabrics (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 3/6/05 2:43 PM ET
Does anyone here know how a burn test works? Can you tell if a fabric is a blend?
I have a mystery fabric and it burned very slowly, left some ash and some was melted.
If you know a good link on this subject I would really appreciate it.

Just go to google and type burn test in the search box. You will get a bazillion hits and a lot of info!

Burntest from fabriclink
another burntest
Sometimes it is very hard to indentify the fiber content because it is a blen of 2 or more fibers. You could burn the crossgrain fibers and another test on the straight grain fibers.
Not only the ashes or remaines but also the smell of the fibers can tell you about the indentification.

I think I read recently that ash indicates a natural fiber and melting or "beading" is synthetic -- sounds like a blend.

Thanks for the links and info. I had not thought to do the warp and weft separately, so I will try that and see what happens. I think it's a polyester blend, but I don't know what the other fabric(s) are.
