My biggest regret over NOT purchasing fabric is over some beautiful, wide-wale cross-woven/changing-color corduroy I saw at JoAnn a couple of years ago (probably winter of '09). It was royal blue and cocoa brown, and it was *amazing!* But I was fasting at the time and didn't have a project in mind for it. Of course, by the time I'd talked myself into getting some, it was gone! (sob)

I've never seen anything else like it, before or since... until now. DH just bought a screen-used movie costume from around 1996... and the vest is also a changing-color corduroy! This time it's deep forest green and gold (not quite as pretty as the cocoa/royal combination, but still pretty dang awesome!).

So now I know that this wasn't just a disappointing one-off, that this fabric does really exist! I just don't know how to get my hands on any of it!

I've tried searches for changing-color, cross-woven, and two-tone corduroy (don't think "two-tone" is quite right; that seems to be where the wales are different sizes or cut to different heights), but haven't had any luck.

But I'd love to know if anyone out there in PRland has seen some (and might know where to find it or even what it's really called), or if you DO ever see some, you'll know someone's looking for it!

Anyone?

Thanks!!

Maybe try looking for Corduroy tagged with the word "rayon" in it. Or "cotton/rayon" even. I think I did see something like that at Joann's a long time ago. In that color way and maybe even more also in a pink/orange color even once. And it was kind of actually shiny and light reflecting in just the "pile" part of it. In a way that 100 % cotton Corduroy would not be. Even with it's nap turned around the other way, or ruffled up or such. It had a solid color back to it, and base, but more a multi color, varigated look pile going on and set into it.

So I think the backing fabric for the Corduroy was cotton, but the pile part of it, had some rayon pile mixed up within the cotton pile of it too. And I think that maybe is what made it different than most, and that is what made it look more "color changing" than most common corduroy from just at a distance, and what angle you happened to be viewing it from each time. When the light hit that shiny rayon in it, from just different angles.

Also the two I think I saw there a long time ago, I think I would call mid wale or maybe something like 12 wales to the inch corduroy, it was not uncut corduroy, not pinwale corduroy, and not wide wale corduroy, if that helps at all.

Perhaps it had been woven like a linen? I have seen two tone linen, orange and navy, pink and red, etc. that seem to change color as you move the fabric. Weft and warp were different colors and I don't know what else is changed in that kind of weave.

Liz, that photo is great! It looks like the ground fabric is black, with the nap being brown...? It's not a highly attractive shade of brown, but at $4/yard, it might be worth picking up just on principle!

Janie, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm describing. The fabric looked blue one way, brown the other. The green/gold we have is a lot more subtle (more like deep dark green that turns faintly gold in the proper light), but I think it's pretty similar.

I don't have any leads to add, but other terms you might try searching on, besides two-tone or cross-woven, could be changeable, shot, or iridescent (I think I've seen fabric.com use this for shot taffeta). Good luck!

This isn't particularly helpful in terms of you finding the fabric, but just wanted to say that I picked up a remnant of something similar a few weeks ago.
It was from a shop in LA that buys out designer remnants and bolt ends.
My fabric looks like corduroy, but the base is dark blue denim and the pile is dark brown. It is really attractive- but feels very synthetic! I was planning on making some pants from the Jalie stretch jean pattern but haven't gotten to them yet.
So, I know it exsists- just where to find???
