I'm addicted to the flea market, I really am. I always manage to find *something*. This week it's a buttonholer. I found this vintage singer attachment, and figured I'd take the $5 and give it a shot. She looks beautiful, almost brand new. All the parts seem to work just fine so I'll probably throw it on my old 237 this afternoon and see how she goes. As I was researching it however what I found curious is that it doesn't come with the usual green plastic case, it came in a velveted cardboard box with silver lettering. It kind of reminds me of the kind of box you might get when you buy jewelry. Here's a photo:

I guess I'm most curious about why this has a box instead of the usual plastic case, how rare is it, was the plastic box optional or maybe Singer started packaging it with the buttonholers a couple years after they switched to that model. If anyone knows, I'd be really curious.

My hunch, and it's just a hunch, is that the black and silver boxes predate the green plastic cases. It's true that Singer's later buttonholers came in cardboard boxes. But the later cardboard boxes from the 1960s and 70s have multicolored, modern graphics.
