I'm getting ready to use my serger for the first project (yea!) and I wanted the thread to match the project since part of it will be seen. I dind't want to buy four cones of blue. I remember seeing somewhere that you could buy one cone and wind up some bobbins for the other three. (It's not a big project - shirt for my son, so I'm not worried about running out of thread on the bobbins).
My question is if I need some sort of special attachement to the cone holders to use the bobbins? I saw a special attachement in a Nancy's Notions catalog so I started wondering if I needed it to actually use the bobbins with the serger. Any thoughts?

I use bobbins wound with regular thread all the time. Usually only on the left needle if I'm using 4 threads or the single needle if only 3 threads. I actually usually just take out the one I'm using in my Sewing machine. Your serger should have come with some type of spool holder other than the cone "triangle" thingies. (I believe that is the technical term). Usually a disc shape.

I do it from time to time. I use the Bob-N-Serge. There's a link to the Clotilde website below so you can see what they look like, but you can get them other places too.

If you're sewing in a seam where MOST of the thread won't be seen, then you can just use the colored thread in the left and/or right needles to match.
If you need to ensure that all the colors are the same, then you should be able to use either bobbins or spools of regular thread by putting them on the spool stands and placing the spool cap (plastic spoke looking thing) on top of the spool of either bobbin or regular thread. I've personally never used bobbins because I usually need more thread than a bobbin can hold, but I have used regular thread spools on all 3 or 4 spool stands. Just make sure you use the spool caps on top and you should be fine. IF your serger came with pieces that can sit UNDER the thread spool (like a black circle kinda rubbery thing), then I would use those as well. You may or may not need the thread nets - I would test it out on some scrap first.
Hope that helps!

When I use bobbins on my serger, I just place each bobbin into a glass or coffee cup and place the glass/cup behind the machine. Thread as per usual.
Oh, and make sure the glass/cup is empty first.

I wind bobbins from sewing thread when I need a match, or from serger thread when I do not have enough cones. You can place a thread spool cap over the spool pin to help keep the bobbins from bouncing.
