I have just raided JA, on a 50% thread discount run, and an extra 10% on the total, so each 3000 yard cone cost me about a dollar.

I bought twenty cones of Coates Surelock, not enough to raise comments from anyone, but a few folk had a look in my cart while I was loading it. I guess that the Joann's in Watertown gets plenty of Canadians stocking up in bulk.

I have read a lot of comments here regarding different serger threads (not the no name stuff), some of the threads are seen as good, some as bad.
In the short time that I have owned my new serger, I have used Maxilock and Surelock threads, neither brand has been a problem for me.

Shedding and breaks are real issues for many people, so I guess we report the facts on those issues.

I wonder what it is that causes us to have such differing views about serger thread, is it down to our opinions or is there something technical going on?

Most people would agree quality is nice because it usually performs better & doesn't cause headaches. I pass by the very cheapest threads because my time is worth something & I prefer not to spend it fixing problems that could have been easily avoided. I wouldn't care if cheap simply meant the dye lot was slightly off. Usually though cheap is more prone to breaking & shredding. Not fun to deal with. Thread is coated to work better. I didn't know that until I got an uncoated batch (4 cones) & couldn't get it to work at all. (Wasted a fair amount of time figuring out what the problem was.) Every few stitches it broke. Called the co. & the rep. said they knew about it & would send me replacements. She explained the coating missing would make it harder to use the thread. So sometimes there is something technical going on. I do wonder if the imperfect threads are given a no name label? Imperfect meaning maybe not enough coating or unevenly spun thread?

Well, I do like Maxi-Lock, and I don't like Gutermann which a lot of people love. Gutermann is very linty. One really nice thing about better thread is that it breaks in your sewing machine far less, thus there is less time spent taking apart the needle plate and wrenching out threads. I just had an event with Gutermann yesterday, and switched to Metrosene on the project I am making. I have some C&C and I like it fine. It works better for me than Gutermann. Try looking at thread with a magnifying glass....it is a real eye opener. I have never used Sure-lock but that's only because I didn't look for anything at JAs when I got my serger I just ordered a lot of Maxi-lock from Atlanta threads - unfortunately they are no longer themselves but part of Cleaner's Supply now and that isn't the same at all. I had no idea how much serger thread one needed and I bought way much. I am still using it after 7 years. HAHAhhaa....oh, and it is just fine after that period of time, and I now know it should be good for lots more years. Apparently modern threads are good for decades, and that old thing about threads not being any good after 5 years is long gone. That assumes you keep them dry and so on.
