Basic quality machine that will last (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

My daughter wants a sewing machine as a gift. When I ask her what she wants it to do she says, "Last." meaning don't fail with light use in many many years. Otherwise do basic things well.
Background we have a machine that we got 40 years ago that has been used about once per year for some small job (repairs etc) and once every 10 years for making something that would be considered a small project. It still works fine. Although it is remotely possible that my daughter will use hers much more, I doubt it. So the priority is to do these chores for years and not break.
Budget is $300. What do you experienced people recommend?

A used Elna 62 .. They are bulletproof. You should be able to find one in great shape for $200 or less.

My daughter also wanted a good machine-I found a Singer 401A, used for 45.00 in the want ads. Since I know about the Singer 401A, as I have one, I checked it out. It had all the parts, accessories, instruction book and carrying case. She had it for over 15 years before she died. She loved the machine and it was the best investment. Go with a classic, check your local Sewing and Vacuum business and let them know what you want. They can help you and may have just the machine you want within your budget. We must support our local sewing businesses if they are to stay in business. I love the business that takes care of all my machines, Stuart Sew and Vacuum in Stuart, FL. Randy and Dolly are super.

I'm not sure of the exact price, but I bought my daughter a Brother Project Runway machine that has served her well. It was about two years ago. If I remember correctly, there are 2 models. She has the better of the two, and I think it was only $500, so the other one should be less. She has made a couple of quilts, some purses, and some clothes, and it's been a great machine.
Hope this helps.
