I chose this forum because it said there's no such thing as a silly question.

I've been cooped up for days fighting some bug and finally am finally starting to feel well enough to walk around. Dang it! I want to sew!

I'm out of black serger thread. May I use regular Gutterman thread in the needle and my gray thread in the loopers?

I have a brother serger. I don't buy serger thread in every color so I will use regular thread in my needles (I could in the loopers too but I would have to wind bobbins to have 4 threads). I usually sew with both needles. I don't use Gutterman thread and prefer Coats/Clark. I find Gutterman to be linty but that is me. HTH

You can use regular sewing thread like Coats & Clarke, gutermann, metrosene, etc. in any and all of the serger loopers and needles. :)

The usual thread we use is a thinner thread only because a strong seam can be made anyway since there are usually 3 or 4 threads in the serger seam.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm desperate to sew. I got my T shirt cut out (after making and altering a muslin) right before I got sick.

It's been sitting there mocking me for 2 days.

If I don't have serger of the same color. i just buy one more spool and put it on bobbin and use that to match. yes you can.

I keep 4 spools of basic serger thread colors, but when I need the odder colors - bright pink, purple, etc, I buy 2 cones of serger thread and use regular thread in one or both needles. It worked on my old White 534, and it works on my newer Bernina. Note: I use Mettler thread for sewing, and it's finer than Dual Duty, but if I had DualDuty in the right color, I'd certainly try it.

You don't have to buy certain threads for you serger. Any Coats and Clark will work just as well as the serger spool threads.

True...but try a sample to make sure that the looper threads aren't so bulky that they show through. The advantage to serger thread is its light weight.
