How to prevent puckers when embroidering name (Moderated by Pyrose)
Posted on: 4/3/13 2:08 PM ET
I'm embroidering name on 100% (one layer)cotton baby blanket. I've tried different stabilizers and different alphabets. They all want to pucker some...from almost none to a lot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is it cotton quilting fabric or a cotton knit? I'd recommend a light cutaway stabilizer (making sure it's hooped along with the fabric), and lower the upper tension just a bit. Are you embroidering with the grain, or on the bias? I would spray it to the stabilizer if it's on the bias or if it's a knit. Also, use a 75 needle if it's just a satin stitch name. Or, just a new needle. Let us know how it turns out!

It's quilting cotton. It's on the bias, facing one corner. I'm sure that's the problem....didn't think about it being on the bias! Duh! I'll try all your suggestions and post back! Thank you so much for the help!

I just discovered another tip from Anita Goodesign....they fuse/sew ultra-weft stabilizer to their fabric before using embroidery stabilizer. I have yet to try this, but I would think that would help. Especially with quilter's cotton.

Did that work? One thing I often have to do to avoid puckers on thin fabric is to put one layer of stabilizer and then a second at 45 degrees angle from first, hoop it all. And spray or iron it so it does not shift. Also try brand new needle, embroidery sharp, size 80 or 75 for that thin of fabric:)

Another trick is to hoop one sheet of stabilizer and then float a second underneath it all.

Would floating a piece of the wash away clear topper stabilizer help?

I don't think it would make a difference on thin fabric. Using 2 layers of stabilizer and spraying the first layer to the fabric seemed to be the key. Did change needle, also. I used AquaMesh stabilizer. Thanks for your suggestion....one never can be sure what will make a difference.
