I.e., where can people complain? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 4/9/13 11:29 PM ET
Without going into detail, one bank I deal with is notorious for messing things up. The right hand often has no idea what the left hand is doing (i.e. their departments don't communicate properly, so sometimes things happen that the consumer ends up paying for). I can't leave this bank yet -- I still owe them money -- but I was wondering, is there some sort of overseeing agency that a person can complain to about a bank? Complaining to the head office of the bank itself does nothing.
I live in Canada, so whatever agencies there are may be different from country to country. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. IMHO they should have to answer to *someone* -- especially banks who consistently make errors that cost consumers time, money, and frustration.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Canada. If it is a bank with a US component it might do you some good to complain to our Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Thanks for the link, Lena. That looks like a great site for resolving issues. Ha, I wish I'd known about this a year or so ago (long, crazy story which I won't get into).
I wonder if they take general complaints as well. There's one particular bank that seems to mess people around more than any of the others I've dealt with.

Thanks for this, nicegirl -- I googled "Consumer Financial Protection Bureau" + "Canada" and found what looks like the Canadian equivalent.

Good luck with your issues. Down here in the land of "too big to fail" it can be frustrating.

I worked for the TD Bank for 20 years. There is a brochure prominently displayed in every branch that gives you contact information on how to proceed if things cannot be resolved at the branch level.
I'm having a senior moment and cannot remember what it is called.
Sorry you are experiencing this frustration but I know it happens. It has happened to me and I worked there at the time.

Have you gone in to talk directly with the manager of the bank?
Sometimes it is better to meet face to face than to try to negotiate through the phones and having to explain your story to several different people.

Hi Vintage Joan- first of all been missing you here and hope your financial obstacle can be resolved. Glad that PR folk have sent you some links to help with your personal situation.
However, reflecting on the your question in the larger sense, I would say no and I am rarely so pessimistic. The banks do not answer to anyone given the evidence of our near miss with global financial devastation in recent years. Who knows how many people were swept up in disastrous consequences with little to no recourse or, too little too late? It was criminal and who went to jail? From what I see, the new controls put in place are watered down and the wheels of fortune are in spin. Business as usual.
Again my apologies for such a dim view of banks. Do not let it deter you from pursuing resolution.
On a brighter subject- your wonderful Tortoise Sewers thread has achieved over 100 pages filled with satisfied sewers. Starting that, you done a good deed. Thanks.

I was a bit upset with my bank for an overdraft fee that I didn't think I deserved, since I had deposited money to cover another payment, and they were holding on to the deposit when the payment came through. And then, in a Marx Bros moment, they told me to make a deposit to cover the payment, which I had already done. I sent a cranky (but polite) message to them through their web site, via the customer service link, and they promptly took the charge off. So, although I was annoyed with them, they did take care of it in my favor.
