I love makeup but don't like this look (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Bronzer is supposed to give a healthy glow, but I find that on my fair "cool" toned skin it just looks orangey. I bought it because the sites that talk about ballroom makeup all use it and luckily I can return it because i bought 3 types to try (gotta love Avon!) One is like a shimmery blush, which is fine, but I already have shimmer in my primer, foundation and concealer, plus I add white and silver shimmer, so I don't think I need much more than that. And rhinestones on my lashes, of course...
The gold tones are nice but just not sure they are so flattering. I am wearing it with my day to day makeup for awhile to see if I can get used to it. Sometimes it is just an unaccustomed look, so best to give it a good trial.
Advice?

I have the same skin tone. Look for a bronzer that's more of a beige-brown with pink. You'll never look like you have much of a tan (since you are fair to start with), but it will give a "healthy glow."

It sounds like you are using the wrong shade of bronzer. It shouldn't change the color of your skin tone, but give it a healthy glow. If you stop in to a department store cosmetic counter, they can help you find the correct shade. I love using it. A persons face coloring needs to match what their neck coloring is. That's always a good guide to if you have too much on. It should all be very natural looking. Good luck!

Thanks. Maybe this is one thing I need to do in person and have someone else looking with an intelligent eye to see what really works.
I suppose part of the question is whether I need this at all since I have so much shimmer in the rest of my makeup. Ballrooms differ in how they do their lighting and sometimes it is full fluorescent "daylight" and other times, as in my new avatar, it is more dramatic and theatrical. We skate a fine line between makeup that can be viewed at fairly close range and full theatrical. Regular day makeup won't cut it at all and really harsh makeup is too much since we are sometimes inches away from the audience/judges.
I think I will return the bronzer to my nice friend and Avon lady and look at working another way.

Shimmer in your make-up is great for your ballroom dancing, but for everyday, I personally recommend staying away from shimmer with the exception of bronzer, which shouldn't really give you a shimmer, but an overall warming to skintone. It's always fun to go to a cosmetic counter and let them help with colors. Enjoy it.

See if you can find the brand "Benefit" . They sell a finishing powder in different shades that range from pinks to the browns....
The "Daffodil" shade is a petal pink that really goes on sheer. It's great for fair complexions. Very pretty finish.
Sandra Betzina uses another shade but shared this finishing powder with our class. It comes in a cute square box with mirror and brush inside.
I think you need to be darker toned to really use the bronzers....

Thanks - I think I will probably eventually ditch the bronzer. I have plenty of shimmer already and I do add some Mica Bella glitter when feeling particularly festive.
I do have some photos coming that will show a better close up picture of the makeup. A friend gave me gorgeous lashes with pink mylar in them, so I had to get a close up of them.

In reply to tourist
I am a "winter" (skin tones) and most bronzers and self-tanners usually left my fair Irish skin quite orange looking, but it always looks great on those Spring and Autumn skin tones people.

I do eyelash extensions for a living...
And when I'm workin' on clients under the magnifying lamp, I've seen some mighty beautiful bronzers.. and some mighy hideous ones, too.
One of the makings of a really good bronzer is that the shimmer particles are very, very, very tiny.
If the particles are big enough to see easily in the product, they usually look nasty on skin - unless we're talkin' on a 20something babe that couldn't look terrible if she tried.
Seems when I compliment some of my clients on their bronzer - they tend to be from the higher priced department store brands.
Just sayin'.

Using the correct shade and application of any make-up is so important. I've always used Bobbie Brown and love the look of her make-up. The colors I might have picked for myself are different from what the make-up-artists pick for me and I always love the look of what they put on me. Makes an amazing difference. It's always interesting to go and have someone put make-up on us and see the difference. There is never any pressure to buy. It makes for a fun day!
