Last night much to my embarrassent at my daughter's ball game my zipper pull got stuck on the serged edge of the denim on the other side after my restroom trip..Well I must have tugged too hard trying to get it loose...the teeth came right out of the zipper tape...Talk about one mom who was glad she had worn a tee that was long enough to cover everything when untucked!!

So my question is....is it worth it to replace a zipper in RTW jeans? These are nothing special (they just fit), just plain Levis, so there's no sentimental attachmnet or anything...and keep in mind I am a zipper virgin, but would be willing to try...

If it's worth it..how do i go about it?

I say go for it 'cause you may need the experience for the next time when the pants are your absolute favorites. If you fail, no great loss. What does it hurt?

So you need teeth? (I usually get mine at my dentist.)

Impossible to slip teeth back on...can't be done.
You'd have to rip the old zip out and put a new one in. Look online at zipperstop.com. They have metal teethed jean zippers. I wouldn't use those 7 or 9 inchers nylon things from Walmart in Jeans.

It is a lot of picking, but a nice project to do while watching American Idol reruns.

Great step-by-steps ... what *do* you use to find all these great link Els??

Although, honestly, this project would sit on my mending pile for MONTHS before I either (a) tried it or (b) tossed it.

Debbie google helps a lot in finding links.
I agree about the task of replacing a jeans zipper, I have only done it a few times and every time I think "shall I bring the jeans to the alteration shop" but I did not . But I do understand why they charge such a high price to do the job.

I don't hate all mending, but this job looks particularly tedious. Easy mending actually makes me feel good about getting something done quickly. If this zipper job was in my mending pile, I would probably forget a zipper replacement and just go for velcro.

Wow Els, that's a great link!

I replaced a jeans zip once, and it would have been a lot easier if I had these instructions.

I'd take them right to my dry cleaner. They don't charge much (I think about $12 last time) and I don't have to deal with it.
