I was reading some of the posts from the recent sewalong for the Grainline Archer shirt, and noticed that Jen suggests she uses a 2B pencil for all her pattern marking, including on wedding dresses!
I assume if it has been used on a wedding dress, it washes out fairly easily??

Has anyone tried this, or regularly uses this method of marking their fabric?

Would love to know your experiences

2B pencil does not wash out easily, sometimes not at all. Ask any quilter.

I've used regular pencils to draw cutting lines directly on the fabric when I wasn't using a pattern - for bags and such - and where it wouldn't show on the finished product. But I would never use it anywhere it had the potential to show on the finished product.

And not just 2B pencil -- pencil marks in general. This page from How Stuff Works is one of zillions of pages that come up in a search for how to remove pencil marks from fabrics. It refers to pencil marks as a stain, which sort of explains why they're so hard to remove.

I use watercolor pencils and they're great because there are so many colors, that you can choose a "barely there" grey or beige or cream.

No to the graphite pencils. I bought two of theses at JoAnn Fabrics. One with the white refills and one with dark.

The "lead" is ceramic and the markings do not smudge or stain and can be easily removed.

Believe it or not, when I'm desperate and my regular marking pencil has lost its lead again, I use a soft pencil. How I remove the marks is with a plastic (art type) eraser.

Kids washable crayola fine markers..freakin' awesome cause they wash out even after sitting 2-3 weeks and I can SEE them easily on lighter fabrics, they don't iron set and are cheap ( love that part especially).

Crayola marker 'tip'

Still use chalk or white washable pencil on dark stuff, but no graphite. Too smeary on soft leads 2B and too hard to see and mark with with hard leads H or F's.
