Christmas in July (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

A couple of days ago my wonderful husband calls me at work from the house he is working on, says "This lady is throwing out a sewing machine, do you want it?"
Me: What kind
WH: A Kenmore, but it looks kind of old
Me: YES, bring it home! (I have never sewn on anything other than a Kenmore my whole life)
So home he comes with a sweet sweet 158-14100 in like new condition!! I cleaned the lint out of the feeddogs and bobbin case, oiled it, plugged it in and it purrs like a kitten with a full bowl of Fancy Feast...
I may ditch the newer model I have except for buttonholes and setting in sleeves.

congratulations. It blows me away that people throw these things out. I nearly shudder thinking of all the beautiful and irreplaceable machines that were surely trashed over the years.

Lovely! I have one of those that I should find a regular spot for in my sewing room. Nice hubby you have!

How quaint!
Don't let the 'kitten' fool you--I'm sure there's jaguar strength hidden in that metal box.
What a charming husband you have to bring this home. I think mine would say 'no thanks' to the owner and never tell me about it!!!!
It looks like those brushed metal dials have nary a scratch or blemish and will perhaps first feel human touch when you touch (caress?) the dials.
May you bond well. This looks like the start of a long and rewarding relationship.

Wow - good for you! I just found one on Craigslist for $100 - rarely used but no model # given. Of course, I inquired. My first machine was a Kenmore and I wish I still had it.
It was the best for buttonholes!

Congrats!!! I had one that looked a LOT like that machine. Bought it in 1974 after graduating from college. I did a lot of sewing on that machine.

Don't ya just love it! I have an old Elna which shares proud space with my new fancy ones. That ole girl has bailed me out more than once and I will never get rid of her.
Some of the oldies are the best. Congratulations, that really is a score. And what a sweet husband for having you in mind and an eagle eye.

Score #2 - WH is really racking up the points! Same house, same person who must have more disposable income than us because this time she was going to throw out her Dyson "Animal" vacuum, just because the latch spring on the bin (the one that empties the dust) doesn't work. We have a Dyson D7 that is 10 years old and we have never replaced the HEPA filter or the washable filters. So WH brings home the washable filter, installs it and OMG!!!!!!!!! Who knew that "lifetime filter" means replace every 4 years or so...our vacuum now works like new, it felt like it was going to suck the wall-to-wall carpeting off the floor. LOL.
The moral of this story - if you have a Dyson, replace the filters. You can get them on Amazon.com for relatively cheap, and your $400 investment will last twice as long or more.
p.s. WH is coming home with the upholstery attachment, beater bar and whatever else he can cannibalize today.

Jealous!
I have this machine, but only the straight stitches work. Repairman said he can't get parts to fix it
I was lucky enough to get a similar model at Goodwill for $13, but it's not the same as using grandma's old one.
