I am finding it difficult to grip the fabric for free motion quilting. I have tried gloves and I did not have much luck. I was wondering about the hoops? Has anyone tried free motion quilting with a hoop? Did you like it and what brand did you use?

Thanks,
Rebe

Unless you are doing a very small area, no to the hoop. Before you know it, the foot is bumping into the side of the hoop.

I use the gloves with the "rubberized" finger tips; Machingers.

The Supreme Slider also helps with the movement of the quilt.

That's just my opinion, there are sure to be more to follow and maybe even some repeats.

I came here to say pretty much the same thing. Sorry for being repetitive, but if you have not tried Machingers gloves I recommend them. I do have the hoop for my Pfaff, and I find that sometimes I prefer to use it for certain techniques, but it is usually always second choice to my gloves.

Another vote for "no" to hoop and "yes" to Machingers

Yes, also, to the Supreme Slider (or some other teflon surface cover)if your surface isn't slippery enough. I use one on my Brother PQ1500, the painted surface of the machine bed isn't as slippery as the stainless bed of my Bernina.

I do not like a hoop but love the Machingers - make sure you get a small enough size. I originally got sm/med only to find that the XS fit nice and snug and work beautifully. I tried 2 other kinds of gloves and had no success until the machingers.

I would not even consider a hoop, so I can't help you on that one, but will add a BIG yes to a teflon of some sort sheet to lay on your table. It really does help the quilt slide better. I have the machingers gloves, and they do help me some, but it's the teflon that makes the biggest difference.

Another vote for Machingers here! I had first tried gloves made by Fons and Porter and while those worked ok the gloves would stretch out and essentially be ineffective. Machingers cling to your hands and are so comfortable. I sometimes sew with them if my hands are dry which makes it hard to grip fabric. The Machingers allow me to relax my hands and still get a good grip of the quilt.

I've also used the quilt halo, especially for small quilting inside a block. I find it useful for that. Feathers on borders, not so much.
