Hi,

I just purchased this gorgeous taffeta and when I decided to finally start on the outfit I realized that there is a tad bit of stretch in it.
I wanted to make a skirt and a top - that I have made before with a 100%cotton fabric.
So stretch was never the issue.

Now I unrolled the bolt. And I noticed that there is stretch in the length of the fabric (selvages to the sides). I thought that stretch should be in the width (as in jeans and such to work and stretch out better with your curves).

My question is... the longer I look at it the more scared and intimidated I feel to start cutting into it. This is a very expensive fabric.
Do I cut with the grain? In the length of the fabric even though the stretch is in the length?
Please Help

I've noticed in RTW and better fabric stores there are some silk taffetas with stretch. Donna Karan uses some cottons with lengthwise stretch. I think it helps with wrinkling, particularly in the areas that wrinkle when you sit down. I can't think of any issue you would have with fit but I also can't remember if I've ever sewn with any. I hope you get more responses!

Thanks so much for your reply...
I received an answer to it from a friend of a friend who is a professional seamstress.
She said..."Ignore the grain and have the stretch go around the body"
I am working on the fabric right now and it works like a charm.

Thanks so much!

I just finished the outfit about a week ago!
It turned out gorgeous!
I am happy that I decided to "ignore the grain and have the stretch go around the body" Now that the garment is finished I can not even tell it had a grain and the stretch going in the width actually makes sense.
I wish it was possible to show a photo of the garments...
