I seen this pretty princess seamed lace dress that flares at the bottom on jcpenny that no longer is being offered apparently. It has a Navy lace top layer and looks like a mint green layer underneath. both look to be treated as one when sewen. I want it to move nicely when dancing and not hang as heavy window drapery. I found two laces I like. one is a very light weight lace which I think looks too light that the underfabric will show through a lot. The second is a little more money but has a little more depth to it and shows off the color of the lace better. I'm leaning towards this one but, I want to know what underlay fabric will I want to choose. Is Charmeuse going to end up being too heavy with the lace for a nice light flowing dress. What is Silk habotai (china silk) is it still a nice looking fabric that I would want to show through the lace. I've only heard, never seen, that people use it as a lining. I want the dress to be light and move when I walk and dance and not heavy looking.
Any other fabric suggestions welcome

I've made quite a few lace over lay dresses in my day. I love them. I've used a heavy lining material that matches and also Casa Satin(from Joann's). Treat the over lay and the underlay as one piece. I always lined my dresses too, so it was actually three layers thick. The lining was always the lightest weight I could find.

Here is a little number I made about 20 years ago. It was "liquid" gold with a red lace over lay. The camera flash doesn't show the true colors.

Here is a view of the lining

Just a note: This was a strapless dress and made for dancing. It moved with me and stayed up well.

beautiful. Thank you for your reply and info. I know of the liquid gold you are talking about.
I ordered a swatches of the two laces. I thought it would have been here by now so I could have made my choice of which lace I wanted and make my order this week so I could get started on the dress by middle to end of next week. But, here I wait and its not even been shipped from what I see. So, I bought a couple of dresses yesterday. if I get the dress done that will be the one I will wear. But, at least I have a couple of backups. I should have started this a couple of months ago I guess.
