comparing JANOME sergers (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

Hi All,
I am looking to purchase a serger and I went into the local sewing centre and nearly fell over at the prices
Anyway, after the initial shock, I realized that this is going to be a larger investment than I had thought. Being new to sewing/serging, I guess I didn't know what I was in for. So I came home and started researching on the net - the serger that the local store recommended was the JANOME 734D. I haven't seen much on the net about this serger, rather the 634D keeps popping up everywhere. Being new to sewing, I want something easy to use, not too many bells and whistles that I won't know what to do with, but a machine that will allow me to develop my skills and be sufficient as I become a more advanced sewer. What is the main difference between the 634 and 734 and is it worth the extra $300-$400 to go up to the 734D? Is there another brand/model that you would recommend over these ones?
Thanks for any advice/suggestions you can offer.
Diane

Janome makes good sergers. Sears Kenmore sergers are also Janome. Sears has sales often and you might be able to find a serger with the same features at a lesser price. You can find Janome also called New Home sergers sold at on line dealers with 4 threads, diff. feed and easy threading for as little as $199 and free shipping. I suggest to sit and try some sergers to find the best one for you. Though sergers all do the same thing some have more features, some offer more stitches, some are easier to use than others and even sound and feel different. I suggest to buy the one that feels best to you.

Diane, I don't know about the 734 but I had the 634 for several years, it was a great machine and pretty easy to thread and use. Whatever you buy, if there's a video available, get it!
