Thanksgiving Contest (Moderated by Sharon1952)

Thought I would share.
All the Thanksgiving Contest entries are wonderful. Congratulations to all selected. I am however disappointed that the first place winner has never taken an online Craftsy class. Not even a free online class. Their only activity was to post three quilted applique entries in the Thanksgiving Contest. Maybe next year Craftsy should include rules which require entrants to be active Craftsy.com members. Many members of the Craftsy Community actively support the community by purchasing online classes and materials. It would have been much more inspirational for online students to see another student showcased. After all this is an online community of students and instructors.

I share your sentiments about any contest, not just those on Craftsy. After engaging in discussion here, sometimes a little heated, I too have come to the conclusion that I hate contests. Or rather, should I say, they are no longer geared to the person I am. Contests for me were an impetus to inspire and create, all the while being fair. That said, there were many irregularities I couldn't agree with. And it seems you see the same way on Craftsy.
Rules are more often guidelines, offering flexibility and creating many changes, thereby giving opportunities to the person whom we feel doesn't qualify. It's no longer a world of "fences (boundaries)"; those fences keep moving and sometimes fade off in the distance.

Seems like a slap in the face to me to give the non Craftsy first place position to someone not in the Craftsy community.
I bet they fix this rule quickly and it never happens again.

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.
Bernina 630, Bernina embroidery module, Pfaff 2036, Bernina 1200DA serger, Unique Sewing Cabinet 450L
Gardening info: zone 8 standard map and zone 6 Sunset map

I looked on the Craftsy site and the winner has been a member for over a year. I'm not sure I understand your issue. How do you know she hasn't taken any classes?

Is this a contest that was on PR or are PR and Craftsy affiliated in some way?

I totally agree!! To have Craftsy award 1st place to someone who'd never taken a class *paid* into their dues shall I say, that is a big slap to all those who contribute to the classes and teachers.
For PR contests I use them to motivate me to sew something maybe I would not normally make, or if one catches my attention for fun quick things. I am thrilled the new 2014 Contest are being Voted on here - and they may have a Sewing for Charity - UFO or Wadder, other things us Quilters may be interested in.
Contests are not what they used to be *sigh* and those rules with the fences moving too far off in the distance, maybe it's my age but that is not right either.
Thank you for bringing this up for discussion!
Debbie

As a member in your profile it shows date joined, classes registered etc. Not a single class.......not even a FREE class. The trouble with this is the Craftsy.com website was developed to create, inspire and teach online. Unfortunately the individual only was inspired enough to join. But not inspired to check out the Craftsy platform (even as a FREE class).

I understand the thinking behind this, but not sure I completely agree. Certainly it would seem unfair to have people sign up and join a community without any participation at all just to win a prize, whether it is money, a ribbon or just bragging rights. But since this person has been a member for some time and hasn't just swooped in, paid her membership, won the prize then went away again, perhaps her intent is to be a member and participate only through contests?
We are members of our local ballroom dance society but have never taken a class through them. We are competitive dancers and the classes don't offer us the level of help we need so we take private lessons. We do take advantage of one free practice per week (though this has recently changed and we pay a small fee for it, it was free for years) and we are eligible to compete in the semi-annual club competition. So although we do not participate in classes and pretty much never go to social dances, it was still okay for us to compete (and win! Waltz, Tango and Quickstep) last weekend.
