Posted on: 12/11/13 9:12 PM ET
Hi so I bought some long pins that I really like but after one or two or three uses they became dull and I tried the strawberry thing and no luck... Other ideas or recomindations for long ish pins that last a while? I see a lot of blankets with satin binding

Not sure if this is true, but my first sewing instructor many years ago, had the class make a pin cushion stuffed with wool scraps. Was supposed to keep the pins sharp.

I've been happy with Dritz metallic pins, 1 1/2" long with gold metal balls on the end. You can iron over them and they seem to stay sharp a long time, for garment sewing anyway. Not sure what fabrics or materials you use. These pins come in a disc and there are 40 to a disc. I have also heard about sticking pins in steel wool, but have not tried it.

Have heard of using sand and steel wool inside pin cushions to keep pins sharp

Which brand are the pins?
I used to buy inexpensive pins from Walmart and no name ones from a discount fabric store. Big mistake, they bend, blunt and generally are poor quality.
I now spend the money to buy Clover pins, they are much better quality and work well for my projects. I do not use a pin cushion, I use magnetic pin holders. I have several for different types of pins.

I think they are the Dritz ones with the multicolored ball at the end

I've made several blankets with satin binding. These long pins slide right into all the layers to hold the binding on prior to sewing. And here is a shorter version of the pins. Now if you are handling the pinned fabrics alot then they can slide out so I use pinmoors to keep them in place on the item I'm going to sew.
I love these pins!

Have you tried running one of the pins through your hair, then testing it to see how well it moves through the fabric?
Frankly, I would not want to "sharpen" or run a lot pf pins through my hair.
I would switch to silk pins to see if they work better with synthetic fibers.
Fons's & Porter pins may also stay sharper than what you have been using.

I use Clover, Dritz, and F&P pins and can honestly say I bend or lose the pin before it ever goes dull. The only difference I may have is that I never use a pin cushion. I pins are kept in egg cups or in the tops of Yankee candle bottles on the cutting table. I can't remember the last time I had a dull pin.
