I didn't like having to pay you so much for a gift, but now that you have it... (Moderated by Deepika)

I recently received my eBay bill, and I was dumbfounded. I sold my Janome serger so I could update to my newest one. And when I saw the Final Value fees on the sale, I nearly lost my cookies.
Ten percent Final Value Fee, on not only my sale, but also on my shipping, which was free to the buyer because she paid via Buy It Now (I offer free shipping via Buy It Now as an incentive). Then on top of that, I have to pay PayPal fees. I don't mind the PayPal fees, as the services PayPal exceed those of eBay. PayPal provides a bank, a credit card, a means to ship items, as well as a trust account for my funds. All eBay provides is advertising.
I ask you, is it worth 10% of my money? My serger listed for $450 wound up being $350, and it was two months old.
So Merry Christmas eBay, and don't spend my money all in one place. Lessons learned.

eBay is pricey for selling items especially if you add listing fees. I use the auction format and start it out with a minimum. If my product does not sell, they have not earned a fee from me. I don't agree with the final value fee on shipping. They are not providing the shipping service, yet taking another slice from the pie.
They have the customer base and I try to price my stuff to cover the fees.
Ok...I'm done venting

Thanks for venting with me. I put this under Auction Format, with a reserve because I didn't want someone to pay $150 for a $699 (price I paid for it two months earlier) machine. And then there are the Relisting Fee tricks--grrr! I thought my offering the free shipping with BIN, to cover shipping costs, would have been okay. But my bad--I should have checked the Final Value Fees before I listed it.

Now I am quite curious.. what etsy charges /fees are ?
Posted on: 12/23/13 10:04 PM ET
Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, which lasts for 4 months. If it expires without being sold, you pay the $0.20 to relist it. After the sale, Etsy charges you 3.5% of the sale price of the item, not including shipping or tax. If the item is sold through Etsy's "direct checkout," the system charges you a percentage depending on which country your bank is in. Ie, for USA, it charges 3% of the total including tax and shipping plus $0.25.

That's the price we pay for worldwide exposure, I suppose. I do however think the current fee structure is more fair than it used to be...at least there aren't huge fees until something actually sells.

I have bought two machines on this PR classified with great success. When you are dealing with like minded sewing enthusiasts, it just works.

Most prized possession: Grandmother's Singer treadle machine with the drawers filled with her things, just like she left them.

And if you used paypal as your method of checking out. ? I have wondered if CC fees are charged back to the seller also.. I one time asked and was told they the sellers... could not tell the buyer this info. so its interesting.
I would prefer to pay the seller directly so they could avoid fees.. at least my fav sellers.. not everyone as I rely on paypal for protection you know. Also its just so darn easy to pay with paypal..

First of all I'm a eBay seller. I like the way
They take care if it for you. Now just think
If you had to pay for everything even the pictures
And the person using paypal. That is how it was
A few years back. Pay or pictures pay for the words
And pay for the handle fee. Much easier now.
They have free wording free pictures and only
One time fee if your items sell.
Shipping is. Cheaper through them
I've done it both ways.
Merry Christmas .
