Pros and Cons of Neue Moda Patterns (Moderated by Sharon1952)

Just wondered if Neue Mode patterns are out of date or hard to fit or what...seems like Burda is much more popular, but why is this so? Any ideas? Thanks!

In my case harder (if not impossible) to find locally. I used to use them for years, while they were available in NZ and Australia. I haven't seen them for a very long time, but haven't bothered to order online given the international airmail cost.

I used to see envelope patterns of Neue mode but then just saw them as downloads I think. I am unaware if they make new patterns. I have a few from years ago and they are nice patterns. The styles I have are mainly fairly classic styles, not outdated.

I think they went out of business, so the Neue Modes that are out there have been around for a while. That's not necessarily bad. If there's something you like, try it!

At one time, Neue Mode (pronounced noya moda) was Burda's chief German competitor, but they didn't have the economic power of Burda and lost out. Like the European Burdas, N-M were multisized and lacked seam allowances, and I believe that remained the case during their entire existence. Their construction details and instruction sheets were wonderful, usually in three or four languages, and much more complete than Burda's.
As to design, they used to be among the most radical and fashion forward of those available. I still have some of these patterns, and have found them to be beautifully drafted. However, styles have changed, and many of the remaining Neue Modes that you find will be rather dated, though there will certainly be gems among them.

Thanks everyone--NM seemed to have more variety in styles than Burda--guess my next bet would be Lekala--if I can figure out the poor instructions, from what everyone tells me on PR. Also not sure how to deal with all those papers used in printing off Lekala. I guess American patterns have their place--I rather like having good instructions

Elona, I agree with you about the drafting. As you also suggested, many—but not all—of the patterns for sale now are badly out of date. .I still have some of these patterns, and have found them to be beautifully drafted.
Recently, I bought a few patterns online — I believe, from www.sewingpatterns.com, but didn't realize that there were no instructions included with the pattern; it was necessary to go online to download the instructions. When I tried the complicated procedure for downloading, it didn't work. Fortunately, the first pattern sewn was simple and no instructions were needed. In fact, I might review it soon.

Earlier today I posted a couple of Neue Mode related questions on the PR web site talk forum. Hopefully someone will respond, but in the meantime, I just now saw your post here! Were you thinking of purchasing?

Since I'm often putting together pieces from different patterns to create a costume, I don't have to think too much about being "out of date," JDpenelope. I always am anyway
...and that includes with computer stuff. That's why I'd rather get my pattern mailed. Can you tell me if the Neue Mode patterns you purchased online were printed on one giant sheet of paper? (or pieced together same as if I were to attempt printing it out myself) Thanks!
