What kind of thread (Moderated by Sharon1952)
Posted on: 1/22/14 1:33 PM ET
So this is my first ever quilt and it's a gift. Im making the Fons and Porter Flat friends quilt for my nephews daughter. Im sure it will be washed multiple times since this is for a child. What kind of thread do you all recommend? I want this to last a long time

There are many kinds of thread and different quilters prefer different threads. I prefer Aurifil for piecing because it is thin but strong. Other folks prefer other threads.
We have an entire thread about thread, if you read it you will find various opinions from all of us.

Thank you. I did a thread search but couldn't find it. I'll check it again.

search for THRAD
THRead Aquisition Disease. I piece with anything (especially for kids) and for quilting, with kids, I'd use a 40wt or some such, probably poly since it holds up so well in the wash and is less expensive.

I have always used gutterman, can be found at joann's. Also like mettler, connecting threads. As long as you use a quality thread you should be fine. There are lots of other good brands out there, superior, presencia, aurifil. Many will be found at your local quilt shop. Someone showed a microscope finding of thread cant remember where but found superior, aurifil and gutterman to look the smoothest ouy of many brands. I wish I could remember where I saw it

You can use any thread you usually use for sewing. If you use C&C or Metrosene or Gutermann, you can use it for piecong and quilting too. Later on for fun, you can get with us thread crazies and explore more threads, but really....the truth is you can use any good thread be it poly or cotton to do your quilting.

Here is a picture and description of the quilt.
The pockets are going to be used over and over. I would use polyester sewing thread.
