What is your experience with the new cordless iron? Does it heat up quickly? How long does it hold the heat? Does the "football" shape work ok?

I've seen ads for this. I can't imagine how a cordless iron could be hot enough for sewing/quilting projects. I relate it to kitchen appliances: I've never had a cordless kitchen tool that had enough power to compare with those with cords.

Keep the iron in the base when not pressing and it will be fine. I just got one of these and am happy enough with it. Can't justify spending the $$ one of the cool irons that the quilting show ladies use. This is the one I got. Purchased at Walmart for a good price. Edited to add that I've not used it for quilting yet, but with pressing/steaming/ironing seams, etc. on garments it has been fine. It heats up quickly. I keep the base where I can replace it each time I put the iron down to adjust whatever I am sewing, so it stays hot.

I have a Proctor Silex cordless that is over 20 years old. They are good for a limited period of pressing as with any iron that has no source of power (when turned off, or with the cordless, lifting off the power base). I have mine at the end of the sewing machine table for quick presses when quilting.

I've had a Panasonic cordless iron for over 7 years, and have never had any problems with it. It does have the automatic turn-off, which I hated at first, but now I'm used to it, so it's not so bothersome. Really, it took only a few hours to get used to setting it back in the cradle instead of standing it up on the ironing board.

It's hot, it steams without spitting, it's very convenient not to have a cord. I'd definitely buy another if this one ever fails.
