slits to be finished like neck edge (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 6/9/14 6:42 AM ET
I'm making a lined tunic top with side slits and sleeves. I've attached lining to neck edge and it looks great. The top has a centre back seam and side seams. I want the side slits to be completely encased so that no seams are visible. I don't enjoy hand sewing hence my need for top to be as easy as possible. How do I sew the side slits so that all the raw edges are encased like the neck?

If your fabric is sturdy enough, RTW often just turns over a narrow hem twice, tapering to nothing at the top of the slit. For a nicer finish, and it will hold down the edges better, use self or bias tape. You can wrap the tape around the top opening by making a V there. A narrow short zigzag at the top slit on the outside will reinforce--the kind found on side-seam pockets. Look for photo hints online.

I asked a similar question about vents on a skirt. I didn't get an answer so I started experimenting. I found that I could turn the fabric and lining inside out and sew a straight seam down the vent-it should be doable for slits too. Then press it and hem both. That worked for me. HTH

Gramma b, thanks. my fabrics are all silk and silk types (recycling saries), so really not sturdy types. I want easy, so I think the bias idea is great, but I'm rather lazy. I'm looking for a quick, easy solution

Marie367, thank you. I think your solution could work. So if I understand you; must I place wrong sides together at the sides and sew each back (ff and lining) and front (ff and lining) separately from top to bottom? Then place right sides (back and front) together and sew at side, leaving the slits open? That would give me a finished slit without major drama? Incidently, my fabrics are very light silk and silk types for there won't be too much bulk. Am I on the right path here

That sounds like it will work. Just pin it to see if will work. For the skirt, the fabrics were joined at the waistband-I would assume for a shirt you would have joined them at the neckline and sleeves? The side seams were both sewn seperately because I wanted the lining to be be free flowing. If the hems are done seperately, you should be able to do this.
