Sewing a perfect collar and stand

I'm about to sew the collar and collar stand on a blouse I'm working on ... this will be my first.

I think I'll first baste the collar, turn it right side out and fold in half to check that both sides are the same.

Does anyone have any other tips or a good resource to share? I know if each side comes out differently, it's going to look terrible.

You are right about that, I've gotten near identical, to the point others can't see it at all, but I know. I have to be careful about marking to ensure success. But one thing I think is invaluable is to make samples first - use the fabric and interfacing you're using. I often have to do more than one, maybe others don't and I'm just not as adept or because I don't make these often enough to be as close to perfect first try, but I'll tell ya if I don't make those samples sure as anything I'm going to be ripping it out. More than once!

Oh I should have thought ...

Pam Erny's tip for perfect collar points

I sewed the collar and then remembered her tip. I looked it up and decided to handsew my own loop into each point. I used quilting thread and it worked perfectly.

I still have the stand to do but I'm going to finish up tomorrow when I'm fresh.

I'd never come across this method of turning collar points before, until last night. I normally just use a chopstick or knitting needle.

Last night I came across this great tip from the Sew Maris blog Perfecting collar points, which sounds very like what you ended up doing.

This morning I saw your post about the Pam Erny method. What a coincidence! I think something is trying to tell me to go sew a shirt

If you're trying to get your collars symmetrical, Maris has some other tips which may be useful to you.

The latest Threads has a piece on this. It assumes a certain amount of knowledge, but the photos are very clear. It might make a good accompaniment to some of these other resources.

One thing I make sure to do is when I am cutting the pieces out, cut them on the fold. That way the ends are exactly the same and I have a better chance of them looking good after sewing.
I just did a collar with band (the sleeveless pink top reviewed) and used the thread-pulling technique and they looked great. You still have to trim your seams well.

Here is where I found one perfect for the collar and collar stand in my recent blouse review (peter pan collar)... but also for men's collar

Thanks for this topic, I've had a few of those bookmarked and added more for my next adventure sewing a shirt for my husband. We all want our garments to look as nice as possible, and using these tips help

Thanks for all the links - I just finished the blouse and applying the stand and collar was HARD!! I did it though and am pretty much pleased. I'll post a picture after I finish sewing the buttons.

It came out even as I checked both sides after each and every step. I had to resew the stand (even after basting) 3 times but now I understand that not only does the stand have to be even on each side - it also has to be sewn with an absolutely equal seam allowance on both sides. Then you have to compare them side by side and match sure that part matches too.

Now that I understand how it goes together, I think the next one should go together better.

I'm going to check out all the links in case there is a better way. Like I said, it was tough to do. My issues were primarily with the stand.
