Hello to our northern neighbors! This California "girl" has been designing costumes for a professional adult tap dance company for twenty years and I have a new project for our 2015 season opening concert in October. The music is "Canadian Sunset" and I will be painting silk for women's tops and dye painting men's silk shirts. I have seen many sunsets in my life and definitely have colors in my brain but wonder if there is something special about the Canadian sunsets because of their Northern exposure or whatever else might affect the colors. In SoCal it is the smog that often adds to their beauty, which is not a plus in my opinion.

So, loyal Canadians, your input please! What do you love about your sunsets? Thanks!

Hi Ro,your question reminds me of the time when we drove 4000 miles from B.C. to Florida. The first night we couldn’t find a motel when we were tired from driving near midnight. We had to sleep in a VW Beetle,(we couldn't see the dark building next to the empty parking lot was an animal hospital in CA until we woke up at 5 a.m. ).

From then on we started driving between 3-4 a.m. and looked for a motel to sleep wherever we were every afternoon.I took pictures of every beautiful sunrise in the US.Back home I looked at the sunrise pictures and couldn’t remember where I took most of the beautiful sunrise pictures.

One of the things that I've noticed that is different from living in both Canada and the US is that Canadian sunsets last longer. They seemed to be over in about half an hour in Virginia and often last an hour and a half in the summer in Saskatchewan. The colors seemed similar in both, but I pause to enjoy them more often in Canada.

Agree -- the sunsets are much longer especially in the summer.

Myself, I notice more pink in Canadian sunsets but then my U.S. sunsets are limited to certain times of the year (usually June and August/September).

Thanks for thoughts, info and images. This will be an exciting venture and who wouldn't want to watch a sunset dance across the stage, right? Why didn't I think of googling images?

Where I live, in the summer sunsets start much later (right now around 10:30) and seem to linger as others have mentioned. The light is golden and sometimes pinkish. Even when the sun sets, it still takes a while to get really dark. It is just a very peaceful, slow time of day.

In the winter, in the country especially, you can see the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) sometimes which are just utterly amazing and beautiful. It is like a light show. Google Aurora Borealis or northern lights and you will see many pictures. Technically, I guess the northern lights aren't sunsets per say, but still beautiful. Maybe way far north the northern lights and sunsets overlap because in the far north regions, the sun barely sets at all. Not sure, never have been that far north.
