Too much interfacing (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 7/18/14 1:41 PM ET
I used Peltex 71F to interface the top panel of a handbag. I added a gusseted zipper (fully enclosed) and I made the mistake of interfacing the zipper panels with Peltex as well. I should have used a thinner interfacing but my thought was that I didn't want it to be too flimsy. I'm left with a lot of bulk that I'm hoping a little pressing will make it easier to work with.
I'm going to have a bear of a time topstitching...I'm thinking I may have to use a leather or denim needle to help me through the bulk. Is this the best choice or should I try my luck with a topstitching needle?

Leather needles have a cutting point, so I wouldn't use that.
Try a 16 or 18 denim needle a longer stitch and increase the pressure on the foot if you can.
But first you could try your topstitching needle on scraps equal to what you would be sewing through.

People who make jeans talk about using a hammer to pound the seams and reduce bulk.

Reporting back on my results....
I did try the hammer method on the side seams and though I was worried about ruining the fabric it did seem to help reduce bulk. I used a protective cloth. Great suggestion.
I also worked on pressing it before topstitching, and that helped too. I removed as much of the bulk in the seams as I could before turning. The 16 denim needle worked much better than the top stitching needle, and I was able to get the job done though my machine struggled with the bulk.
The top stitching needle is toast. Brand new and with all the bulky fabric it ended up hitting the metal plate. Grrrrr....
I'm amazed at all the lint in my machine after using Peltex interfacing. I just cleaned my machine before I started this bag. Something to keep in mind.
