I need to let a school uniform skirt down as long as I can get it. The material is stiff, wrinkle proof, and made to wash and wear like iron. I bought wide hem tape but I wonder if matching the navy (the skirt's a navy plaid) with a twill of similar weight to the skirt fabric would work better. About all I can do is attach either with a 1/4 seam and then turn it up on the seam. Right? Or does anyone have another suggestion? (The school won't let her wear a skirt lengthened with tulle and ostrich feathers as suggested on one web site. ;-)

klunky how much do you need to lengthen the skirt?

I have had teenage girls cutting their hems too short on brand new uniforms. In that case I had no other option but to add a thicker band to the skirt.

I'm guessing the twill will be too bulky.

You might be able to add on to the waist instead, depending on the style of the skirt and the top.

Or add a yoke on the top between band and skirt.

How old is the girl wearing the skirt? And is it really too short?

My dd is almost 16 and has worn a uniform skirt for 4 years.

She and most the girls at her school tend to roll the waist band. So what looks like a too short skirt is actually not too short at all.

Another option, check if the uniform shop has any returned skirts, I know our school has lots of second hand uniform pieces, and see if you can exchange it for a longer one.

Also see if a larger size would be longer and then just take in on the side.

As an add on to my above post, if the child is in a growth spurt, she will fill after the growth spurt and you can then let the side out if you have not cut it.

that's the easiest way, and will have the least bulk at the hem

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

I don't know, I think it'd be really hard to lengthen a pleated skirt. I'd go with the advice to see if you can exchange for a longer version with your school.
